It was in the pitch black that they came. Desperate they were and desperation would see them through the rest of this night. They approached the ends of the cave where the forbidden trails were marked. They ignored the signs and one of them managed to disable the alarms with a single glancing blow. They were not to be stopped.
They were a pair of determined and desperate men, men with a single last ray of hope left to them. One small glimmer of light before they were completely lost to sorrow and perdition.
“Are you ready?”
“Are you?”
They entered the Deeps, side by side. They didn’t have much time. Soon the alarm would sound and the guards would come. It mattered not. If this failed, they were already dead. They quickly and with the seamless efficacy of two who had worked together a very long time, set up what they would need for this.
One of them nodded to the other, it was all prepared. Now to do what none had done before. They quickly sketched out their will and one of them started the ritual chant. The other kept the beat until he saw his companion’s nod.
“Call her name. Bring her back.”
The man repeated her name over and over again in time to the chant by his companion as they stared at opposite ends of the bier. Slowly a queer sort of light started to fill the cavern, building more and more until it seemed to explode with a flash. Both men threw up elbows to shield their eyes. When the light faded down to a manageable level, they both half stared in shock at the body lying on the bier.

“Everybody fights for something; some fight for love, some fight for glory, some for the greater good, some fight because they have no choice or because they don’t know what else to do. Everybody has a reason and the truth of it is that deep down, we all need a reason to fight, we all need a reason to throw ourselves into the thick of battle and it’s that reason that gives us hope, that’ll keep us going against all odds, that gets us out of bed in the morning.”
Morgan DeWitt
Project Thalion is a science fiction – fantasy series of short stories and novels, set in the perhaps not so distant future. The series is divided into three volumes. The Beginning is how the two different worlds collided. The second volume is about the war both on Earth and on Waverly Vale. The third centers around the aftermath of the wars and the Ingathering. It initially begins with an elite school funded by a multi-national corporation. This corporation, OsirisCorp has connections to everything, from household appliances to defense contracts to making toys for small children.
The world is slowly heading more and more towards a totalitarian one world government. People are not encouraged to think for themselves and children spend most of their time connected to virtual reality programs highly regulated by the government. OsirisCorp has funded a school. An elite school for the children of their employees as well as a few others. Litchfield Academy, a school dedicated to preparing the few children with the spark to become more than the government would necessarily allow. Giving them the capacity to think for themselves, to ask questions, and to use their God-given brains.
Add to this interesting situation, a set of exiled refugees from a planet much like Earth used to be. And a chance to start over there, make sure things don’t go south the way things on Earth did.
Welcome to the Project Thalion universe, where space/time travel is possible, there are wonders both beautiful and horrifying to be seen, and where anything you dream of can in fact happen if you are willing to pay the price.
Because there is one rule that governs all, from the smallest to the largest.
Everything has a price.
This is the novel series that I have been writing since 2004 and for which the concept has been in my head since 2001. It’s not published yet, but I have hopes for it. It’s more of a young adults novel than it is general sci-fi/ fantasy, though that may change as I continue to write it. Every now and then bits of PT will pop up here on the blog.
